MILES REMAINING ceased function

I clipped off and removed the tank-mounted fuel gauge to install a flush-mount chrome cap.To my horror, the digital side now reads EMPTY all the time.

How much of the fuel gauge needs to be connected and in place for the digital "miles remaining" to work? Is there a simpler way? I'm not about to pay $180 for the Harley chrome cap/LED kit.

I am surprised that happened. Almost sounds like the connector on the float assembly wiggled loose while removing the tank mounted fuel gauge.
You can place an ohm meter on the tanks external connector to see if your getting a rheostat reading.
