mainshaft support bearing

1999 Wide Glide. Grinding noise on primary side when moving. Noise goes away when I pull the clutch in. Pulled the clutch & compensator and can hear grinding noise when turning the mainshaft by hand. Haven't pulled the inner primary yet, but suspect the mainshaft support bearing. Can the mainshaft support bearing be removed without removing the gearset? Probably not, just wanted to throw it out there to you guys.

It could be your Inner Primary bearing for the mainshaft. When you take that off look at the bearing on the backside of inner primary. After that look at the race still on the mainshaft. It should be between .100"-,200" from the end of the main drive gear/5th. gear. That's the where the Big nut holds on your belt sprocket. They have a habit of walking backward towards the gear and taking out the small seal between the gear and the mainshaft. But to answer your question, no you can't take out the bearing for 5th. gear without removing the gear set. And you can't get it out without removing the race off that shaft. Special tools for both pieces,on & off.
