IMO, lowering a softail does not change the ride all that much. The lovely Mrs. Slapp's 2011 Heritage was lowered for her about a week after she got it (with the HD kit). It was not drastic we lowered it just about 3/4 of an inch added a seat to help sit even a little lower and she got some new boots with a taller heal. I rode the bike before and after the lowering and the handling never changed but the ride was lower. The bike now has about 8000 miles on it and rides as good as the day we bought it (actyally better).
One more thing I do think if you go radical low (inch or more) then yes there will be adverse affects, but not so much the we did it.
