Before changing anything I would focus on what Jack suggested in entry point #4. The Nose cone pickup certainly could cause the problem and that is where I would look first. I would take the cover off and with the bike running, heat that sensor with a hair dryer or chill it with an inverted can of "Dust off" spray.
You should get a response from heat, then maybe correct it by chilling. The Hall effect trigger switch would be my 1st choice under the microscope.
