Installing Rear Wheel

Since I'm installing a new rear wheel I'm wondering about a note in the factory service manual. It says that after installing the wheel/spacers/axle and torquing to spec that the bearing play needs to be checked. But I can't fine a thing on how the play is checked. Anyone know what they mean?

put a magnetic base dial indicator on the brake disc, position the dial indicator so that it is on the end of the axle push / pull the axle and see how much movement there is read on the dial guage
end play should be between 0.002 to 0.006 this is for evo bikes with tapered wheel bearings so may not be the same for your bike
