In gear or neutral?

I shift into 2nd first to get it moving a little and then drop it into first while it’s still moving.

Years ago I was selling a Triumph 750 on a cold winter day and I decided to warm it up for the prospective buyer. In my haste I didn’t use the kick starter to break the clutch plates apart as was my habit and shoved it into gear. I’m not sure what broke exactly but the bike wasn’t going anywhere on its own power after that and I got half the asking price. Whenever I have forced things it generally hasn't worked out well.
