Hot start problem

I have a buddy who has a 2006 Softail Deluxe EFI. It starts perfectly when cold, the problem comes if the engine is hot, and we stop a few minutes for gas or something like that. What happens is when he tries to start the engine it coughs and sputters with smoke coming out the pipes. If he lets it sit for about 5 minutes it will reluctantly start. If it sits for more then 15 minutes or so it will also start fine. It is only when it has been shut off for around 5-10 minutes that it has a problem. The dealer cannot seem to duplicate the problem, but most likely they are not getting it up to temp then shutting it down and starting it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sounds like something electronic, like temperature sensor, throttle position sensor or the like...that is why Chopper has a very good point regarding codes. May also have vapor lock (air bubbles or leaking fuel line) or bad fuel pump losing "prime" cavitating air, losing fuel pressure.
