Just one additional thought, as Glider says, turn the ignition on and let the self test diagnostics run through and the EFI fuel pump "stir" before hitting the starter.

This is like your auto or truck...this self check also verifies that the diagnostic lights and functions work...! Don't feel bad, the guys who have diesel trucks already KNOW what patience is and probably driving more miles than any of us! :s
