heritage springer headlight bugaboo

98 springer with spots...no low beam w or w/o spots on. hit the hi beams and spots stay on headlight comes on but VERY dim, and slowly gets dimmer to a point. replaced burn connector at headlamp along with the bulb but no change.
also there was a black wire hanging loose in the bucket that wasnt attached to anything. So, looking for some advice. I'm 120 + miles from the nearest harley guy. any help would be appreciated.

The black wire is probably the ground circuit for the light. Turn on the ignition and just momentarily ground that black wire while watching the bulb. When you find it lights up OK, reconnect the black wire to a suitable ground.
