Help with backfiring issue on 96 super glide evo please

Hello,

Hoping someone can help me out. I'm stumped!!

I have a 96 Super Glide Evo that is backfiring through both the carb and exhaust (sometimes both at one time). It also shoots flames out the exhaust sometimes. If and when it does start, it runs really really rough, and has a really rough idle. This all started after a backfire out of the carb one day upon start-up.

So far, this is what I've checked...
*checked for intake vaccuum leak
*checked wiring to the coil as well as the coil itself
*checked the plugs
*checked the ignition timing
*I re-adjusted the pushrods
*ran a compression check and it came back as about 180 per cylinder front and back

Argh!! What else can it be? What else can I test?

Does anyone know how to test the electronic module on this thing?

Thanks in advance

Check out the wiring to the ignition pick up in the nose cone. They have been known to cause a problem.

Thank you glider for your help.

Lo and behold the VOES switch was unplugged. I made it harder than it was. Guess I should have checked that a long time ago....
