If you take your time, and no panicking. It's a fairly simple. I did it on my first v-star ,then on my rk and wifes sporty with chrome switch housing,and clutch and master cylinder brackets. I never touched or owned a bike before 3 years ago, but I took my time,(they go on like the old ones came off)
When I got frustrated,I took I brake. I won't let anyone do anything on my bike, until I try first. (they had to learn too)
 
Here's some reassuring facts to ponder...

The tech at the dealership started just like you did and maybe on your bike, so why can't you do it now?:D
