An old army trick for blacking out iron sights on a rifle were to soak a rag in some oil and burn it
so any bit of oily rag wrapped round the end of a long screwdriver would allow you to get smoke in any position you wanted it
however having a naked flame near the petrol tank isnt always a good idea

I just tightened the exhaust header bolts (nuts) the other day on the rear cylinder. Not to sure how they managed to loosen up, but I could definitely hear the ticking

And...if its been leaking for a bit you'll have a visual (soot).
