Soak again in white spirit and leave overnight then back to it
Sometimes a wee bit at a time with breaks in between and not to rush the job gets the best end result
Keep scraping
If you end up with some stubborn wee lumps autosol and an old tooth brush often work

Thanks Guys, for all your suggestions, advice, tips, I bought a quality James Gasket kit and the job is done, full top end strip down, base, head, rocker gaskets replaced, and now a very clean 1999 evolution engine!
