Engraving a cover

Here's a question for you all. I've been thinking of having a chrome cover engraved. But, I'm wondering, won't the chrome be jagged, and possibly start to peel or flake around where the engraving is done?
I would think that it is proably better to have the engraving done prior to having the piece chromed??
I don't really have any experience with this sort of thing, so I'm looking for some answers from those who have possible done this or have been in this business....After all, if there's one thing that Harley folks should know about, it's chrome!!!! :yes

My son had these done and gave them to me for Christmas. No jagged edges, they look just fine.100_2608.jpg This was done on a stock chrome horn cover.

There are several places that do engraving on covers. Put Derby cover into google and you will have a variety of folks to choose from. I had one done but had it re-chromed afterwards.
