engine noise

My 08 has a bit of a ticking noise at higher revs, but have been told by numerous people that it is normal on sportsters. And plenty of other sportys are making the same noise.

The post to look for a comparo are a good start.

IMO, the engine sounds a bit agricultural, or tractor like on a Sporty.

I wouldn't say there is any ticking or metallic sounds.

This much gear meshing will and does create noise.

a good way to understand the differences...

sewing machine = metrics

THRASHING MACHINE= harleys
now i hope you can feel good about your harley and just go ride.

signed....BUBBIE

Ouch Bubbie, a "Thrashing machine" is a bit harsh, something more agricultural like a tractor would be a bit "nicer"...think...eh one potato - two potato at a time maybe?:s

More gears more noise, not always a bad thing, Sportsters have better valve train alignment than Big Twins Go figure, Jack

I had a Honda VFR that I rode around on and when I hopped on my sportster it sounded like I was on a tractor compared to the Honda. Have you listed to the tranny on the sportster when you shift it sure dosen't sound like the metrics.

That why everyone puts loud pipes on Harley's ,so they don't have to listen to the motor.LOL
