Simon had been in a mental home for twenty years when his doctors recommended that he be released. Dr. Maloney decided to interview him before signing his release form. “Tell me,” he asked Simon, “if we release you, what do you intend to do with your life?” Simon said, “Once I am released, I will not return to being a nuclear physicist because, as you know, it was the stress of my work in weapons research that helped put me here. If I am released, I shall confine myself to work in pure theory. Or I might dedicate myself to teaching a new generation of scientists. Or I might write. There is considerable need for books on science for the general public. Or I might even write a novel based on my experiences in this fine institution.” “That sounds very impressive and thoughtful on your part,” said Dr. Maloney, as he was about to sign Simon’s release. “There are many possibilities,” continued Simon, “and if none of them work out, I can continue to be an alarm clock.”
