I just went through this same thing w/ my sporty. I bought it used and later discovered that some mods had been done. It had two previous owners so a buddy who works the part counter at the local stealership ran the vin and was able to show what mods were done through the dealer. He told me that to know for sure I would have to break down the engine and check the tubs. Since the bike is running pristene I figured why bother?

Ask a buddy with an 883 to swap and both of you go for a ride. If both of you conclude, beyond doubt, your bike is quicker and definately has more power that should tell you.

Or stop by a dealer and ask to test ride an 883. I've never ridden a 1200 but everyone that I talked that has, says there is a huge diffence in power.
