Disappearing air filter

This air filter is off of a 2009 flstn with 3000 miles on it. this is a stock filter and is the first time i checked it, and to my surprise this is what i found, what could have cause this ?
I've already ordered a K&N filter, but I'm curious what happen here. the bike was never driven in the rain.

Looks like a non washable filter that was washed, several times.

Never washed, i have been the only owner of this bike.

Harley had that problem with their paper filters a while back that were being ingested by the motor. I think it has been remedied by now with a different filter media but the K&N is the way to go.

Was there a recall ? maybe i can get a new filter out of them.

Don't remember any recall but it's worth a try if you bought it yourself from the dealer.

Do you think any of this stuff got into the air chamber and caused any damage ?

I've seen rodents do similar things so if it wasn't them be ready for that excuse from the dealer.

The dark stuff looks like mold. Did it get wet?

No mold, just dirty
