Follow the fat cable that comes out of the front of the primary just behind the oil filter regulator is at the end of the cable should read no more than 14.7 volts across the battery terminals at any revs
if regulator is bad your battery may be damaged as over voltage will warp the plates
Best always when replacing regulator to use the long wire that is fitted to it will be much easier to splice the old wire but can lead to issues later on
And it can be a bit of a pest getting the long lead into the correct location
