Primary Oil Leak - Archive - Harley Davidson Community

My trans vent hose is spraying a little oil. Just enough to get the primary wet but hardly ever drips on the ground. The trans oil was in there all last season, not overfilled, and it only started doing this in the fall.

Where does the primary vent? I always thought it vented through the clutch release rod/tube and out the trany vent.

Thanks,
Doug

The primary is vented through the hollow mainshaft into the transmission.
Make sure the vent hose is not kinked or plugged.

ALSO HEARD ???? OF OVER-FILLED PRIMARY CAUSING EXTRA OIL TO GET INTO THE TRANNY ON THE OLDER BIKES AND OVER FULL WILL CAUSE THE OIL TO COME OUT THE VENT TUBE.

Nothing positive here, but on my 2000 dyna 5 speed, it would BLOW out oil UNTIL it found it's own FULL level and not mine..

Like Bubbie says, sometimes the ol' girl will do the talking for you if you overfill...:D
