Choose a bike, any bike?

Sounds like a great trip and as you aren't planning on going vast amounts of miles in any one day doesn't matter what bike your riding just matters that you are riding a bike on the trip
when i was younger and money was tighter i used 2 backpacks with the straps tied together thrown over the seat of my bike to carry most of my gear additional storage was gained by having a rack and between the pillion seat and the rack the bags would be tied together
so you dont have to have specialised bike/luggage to do you trip just a wee bit of thought and a lot of bungees
in current touring trim i use a couple of dry bags for the gear when touring in Europe
so let ingenuity and imagination lead your way and enjoy your trip

Yeah, I suppose buy right, buy once....but well equipped how much is an ultra goingn to cost me?

$18 to $21 k depending where you go to look!! IMO- Don't look at the Ultra and yes I have one myself. But in your case and what your going to try and attempt ---- Road King will do you fine!! But please --- if your "roughing" it by staying at state and fed. parks in a tent ---- jump in the creeks once in awhile !! hahahahaha! J.K. You be safe and enjoy your journey my young friend!!! Once you complete this - we want pics. and details!!!

Dreams, I rode to the 48 lower states this summer, plus 6 Canadian provinces. I did this on an Ultra, because I'm an old guy and like my creature comforts. However, I also have a Street Bob that I ride locally. I actually prefer the Street Bob for it's handling and performance. I have a set of saddlebags, a Bikers Friend roll case for a backrest and added storage, and a windshield on it. I rode this for several trips prior to buying the Ultra. There is absolutely nothing wrong with touring on something besides an Ultra. It all depends on what you can afford, and your desired comfort level. Make sure that whatever you get, that it is in good condition, you maintain it regularly, and that you have enough basic knowledge, tools and parts to get you to the next town. With a trip like yours, you will see a lot of desolate areas, so be a good scout and be prepared. I also carry a cell phone when my brain/skills aren't up to the task.

Best of luck, and as previously stated, we want pictures and details.

Despite being 20, I'm not very good with computers, so I won't quote anybody or however you do that, but....I will mention you...Someone told me while roughing it not to forget to jump in the creeks...but why do you think I'm going?! It's the little things in life, I've already found that out. Also the last person to put a message said they loved their street bob. I was actually just looking at an '06 street bob, that I could afford, and that is an awesome looking bike, and you say it handles nice, and performs just as well...definitely going to look more into that bike. And the backpack type saddlebags....AMAZING!!!!!!! I'M USING THAT!!!!! anything other amazing ideas like that definitely throw my way. I do want to be roughing it as much as possible, but see everything there is to see! I think about this trip every day, I hope it is as good as I think it will...

As a thought on the living rough old scottish infantry saying is any fool can be cold wet and miserable
so look into military surplus gear for living rough (sleeping bag, cooking equipment, water carrying, foul weather gear etc) because the infantry are good at that sort of thing
