Chattanooga to California

I am planning a trip this summer from Chattanooga Tn to CA.I need some advise on the best part of the summer to go. I heard that it can really get hot out west.

I guess it would depend on what rout you are planning on taking. If you are staying south I would think you might want to avoid going during the last week or so of July and probably The month of Aug.

I am Probaly going to hit Hwy 40 outside of Memphis.That is pretty much a straight shot to Ca.Plus,a lot of stuff i want to see is just off hwy 40.
