Charging System

Hi, I have a 2006 Ultra and it has just started doing this. After you start it the check engine light comeon and stays on for 8 to 10 seconds and goes off. While the light is on the volt meter is around 11or 12 volts and then comes up and the light goes out and stays off. I checked for any codes and it shows clear. I started it with the seat off and a volt meter hooked up and it was at 12.86 when I started it and after about 8 or 10 sec it started coming up and with it reving 2500 or so it was reading 14 volts. After I shut it off the voltage keep dropping till it was back to 12.86. Do I have a battery going bad? Would input as I have a trip scheduled at the end of the week.

If the light is coming on there really should be a code stored. Very few faults don't set a code when it comes to the charging system. It sounds like the charging system is going out, either the regulator or the stator.
You might try cleaning and reinstalling the battery cables too.Neg off first and on last.

12.86 is about right for a sittin battery when its runnig it should come up like you stated if you have a batt that takes water ck it ,john

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I better take it to the shop. I'll try cleaning the battery post first.
