Just wondering if this is ok to do, and how late is to late, without having leaking issues?

You should be able to switch at any time. It's the same viscosity oil.It will start easier when it's cold out.

Go ahead and switch you'll be fine.

I switched at 32, 000 miles. When I changed the oil I made sure to scavange the system and glad I did. Approaching 5, 000 miles and the oil is nearly as clean as it was when I changed it. I ride all year round and it started so much easier on those cold mornings. As for your concerns about oil leaks, there were none. I'm sold on the syns. Hope this helps.
