Can't get Neutral or First

Haven't seen this issue addressed here, so here goes. Heading home after a short putt to the grocery. As I pulled away from the intersection and turned left, I heard a sound that I thought was the kickstand dragging, as if it wasn't fully up and was tinking along the pavement in the left turn. When I pulled into the neighborhood three blocks later, I could not get the tranny into Neutral or First. 2-5 seemed to be OK, but rather than do more damage experimenting, I parked and shut down.

Right now its on the lift, still in second gear, with all fluids drained in anticipation of some serious de-construction. So before I go any further tho, I am hoping someone has some ideas of where to start.

Thanks in advance for helping out a Noob. At least to this site. 2003 FXDWG that I have been riding since new.

Look at clutch cable operation first. Some times as the cable starts to break you do not have enough pull to disengage and engage lower gears...... Are you able to shift into nuetral on lift????

Nope, can't pull the shifter up past second. I will check the clutch cable, tho, but not tonight. To much happy hour at this point ! :^)

P.S. Thanks for the reply.

Be sure to throughly check the pivot for shifter. At times splines become corroded and will not pivot properly. Disassemble clean and lube.

Conflicting information here. "2-5 seem ok" then "can't pull shifter up past second".
Does the lever return to center after pushing down or pulling up?

Check the shift lever at the transmission for security. Disconnect the tranny from the shift rod and see if it shifts down. If not, you need to take the trans out and apart. At least that what it sounds like.

Thanks all. Looks like the clutch adjustment will be first followed by the hunt for the return spring.

Sorry for the confusion, Breeze3at. The bike is parked with the tranny in second. Before I parked it, I could shift 2-3-4-5 and back 5-4-3-2, but that was it. Couldn't get from second to Neutral and therefore First was also unavailable. Hope that clears up my predicament.

Won't be able to tackle it for a week due to that pesky work thing. I'll post what I find later.
