I just bought a 07 street bob with 5000km's on it.. Rode the bike for about 700 clicks and noticed every now and then the bike would just bind up when trying to start.. hit the button a second time and she would fire right up.. then i started getting a grinding noise.. pulled the primary and found broken teeth off my ring gear.. anyway the new ring gear which is attached to the clutch assmebly is $800 cdn funds.. Im wondering about welding on new teeth.. build them up and machine them back to shape.. the pinion on my starter is nicked up a bit but according to a couple dealers you can't buy just the pinion anymore.. you have to replace the whole starter.. which puts me up to 1400.. the pinion isnt bad enough to buy a 600 dollar starter.. anyone here ever weld a ring gear and have success??

Well, I suppose you could do it. But the problem I see is flame hardening the teeth after welding and shaping the teeth. The douse after the heat may warp the ring gear and tweak the basket. I f you will have to replace it anyway, you might as well give it a try. Who knows, you might get lucky?

That is a lot of money. Is there some taxes or rules that do not allow you to just buy one on Ebay or new online from a US dealer? The entire basket with plates can be bought for under $500.

I think that the first thing you need to do is find out why the teeth are broken. Something is not right. I had the same problem with a 98' Springer, and it was the timing control module under the seat sticking in the "full advance" mode when the engine was hot. When I tried to re-start it, the kickback broke the pinion gear teeth (4 sets of gears), and finally took teeth off of the ring gear. If you don't find the problem, it will do it again!:wall

    Coldmechanic,,,

I answered your PM you sent me BUT iI will give it a go Here for OTHERS to hear..

    I am a welder, retired.

I First have to ask IS your ring gear Removeable (riveted)... IF SO you can buy a blank ring gear and Re-rivet it and be done with that, being the simplest..
You can use the old one when removed to drill the rivet holes into the new one.....

On my 2000 FXDS,,,, I did a good job on the welding repair and it lasted Thru today or when I sent it off on trade last aug.09

The welding process I used was Clutch IN-PLACE and Very Careful with ground and welding wire.... YOU can ruin a lit of parts (bearings) IF Not careful !!

Using wire-feed,, .030 OR .035 hard wire , Argon mix gas, -S6 wire (hard- high strength) NOT -S3 (soft-mild)... (you can buy a small 1# spool)
Weld careful in short burst JUST enough to Make-OVER the chipped-out tooth or teeth... Don't get carried away... You'll have to Hand Fit latter... Less to grind away when you HAND Die-grind ring gear to fit... Many ways to check and see the "fit" but I found using the starter gear into the ring gear worked in my case.... I have a GOOD EYE....:small3d012:

The fitting was the delicate tedious part BUT worth the fix......... took me about an hour to weld and fit...

I would do the weld and grind to fit again as I can do it myself and save the BIG bucks on todays parts... BUT i would go with the Remove and replace the ring gear IF Riveted..... Much easier and you can do it your self...

note for Others, Please,,,don't give me Grief as this is the Way I did it..... and it did work well FOR ME....

Check the Stealers for good will work, mine was done under warranty the Stealer told me they have had problems here as this is a new design more like an automotive design that the MOCO has not really used before GOOD LUCK, Jack:s
