Battery Positive Cable Cover

Was cleaning my bike today, and took off the side cover over the battery (2016 FXDL) and just happened to notice that the little red boot cover that usually goes over the positive cable is missing on my bike. Will that hurt anything? Are they even necessary? If so, why there's no cover on my brand new bike?

I would think brand new it would have come with the positive cable cover.
My experience has been that those covers crack and fall off after time anyhow.
I've never had any problems when they are removed.

The cover is only to make it more difficult to short against post. I would bet that during prep before delivery it was left off either by accident or on purpose. I would stop by dealer and request one and you install it.

Not absolutely necessary, but nice just to prevent accidental shorting if a metal item was laid on the battery when the seat was off. Any piece of rubber or plastic will work to cover the post.

When missing the positive terminal cover I cut a bit of old inner tube and tape it on to the end of the cable
Old inner tube has many uses
