battery or not

purchased a 73 fx 1200 in boxes. build is almost complete, but having a light issue, previous owner switched from points to mag to eliminate the use of a battery, But with incresed rpm's it's putting 16 + volts out. Installed a resistor, seems to help but know it's not right. Any ideas before I purchase a new regulator/rectifer?anic

If you look at the attached diagram I would guess your regulator/rectifier is bad/missing.
