Bad Motor

Do you know how much damage it did ? crank ? did it seize ?

What about doing most the work yourself ?

No help from HD. Dealer gave us a number to call at Harley. We called friday and we were told that they could not do anything because of the time. 10 years. So thats it, no help from harley. Now back to square one. Finding
someone to rebuild my motor.

I would suggest that you get a copy of the statement that HD put out Saying they would repair::::::: I would go with IT to the Attorney General in your state and that MAY be the answer... I Remember NOTHING about a time limit.... They said they would fix NO matter who or how many owners, miles or TIME!

I think I would TRY to get them to pay... EVEN Small Claims Court..

Just my thoughts on this matter...

Who ever told you about the 10 yrs Might NOT know what they are talking about..

3/5000$$ is worth the Xtra time in my book.

and Yes Please answer the How much damage to the motor..?? I know the cam area is gone... That Does mean cleaning and redo ALL in that area... The change-over to KIT or Gear drive cams would be best if you go that way.. A NEW oil pump is a Must, and the KIT gives the Best Bang for the $$

I saw the statement from HD from 1999-2000 and it said 5 years or 50,000 miles whichever comes first on the repair of the bad bearing.
I don't know the extent of the damage yet. I am picking up the bike from the HD dealer tomorrow. When I find out who is going to rebuild it I guess thats
when I will find out how bad it is inside. I will let you know when I find out.

Harley's warranty dept has stopped covering the bearing problem, so your on your own, I would go re-man myself, it's hard to do the complete rebuild for what they do it for and turn around time is about 10 days and it's a brand new engine when you get it back. The stock Harley engine is still the best in my book, unless your taking it to the drag strip and plan on rebuilding it every other race.
Here's the price list from Harley for the re-man engines if you do the R&R

Great info Chopper but I would think the consumer would have some recourse being that they were replacing them after the engine grenades which IMO admits fault.

I would HOPE the price for the re-man Could receive Special attention from HD and Maybe a Little lower price negotiated on the re-man..??

I also wonder IF HD has changed over to the newer style oil pump as a standard item for replacement motors OR do they still make and put in the original pump... If they run out of original style , it would seem to be a good idea to eliminate the older pump...... as the new fits right in...

Thanks for Your reply Chopper,,, wonder about Good Will??

Maybe IF animal 15340 checked, Who do you think he should check with... Your Ideas Chopper...:small3d007:

Thanks BUBBIE

I would hope it is just the cam-chest area..... Most of the clean-up to get all the metal out of the system is the key...

Keep us informed about your progress as it Does Help to see what you do..

I would believe that the conversion KIT might save you money on the rebuild if you do it that way... As it comes with the oil pump and cam plate and Hyd. tensioners...
