Backrest/Rack Adjustment

Is the passenger backrest removable from the rack? I would like to run w/ the front backrest and use rack alone, but couldn't find a release mechanism.

After reading the description several times, I understand that you must have the backrest in place to mount the luggage rack. Key phrase "Designed to mount directly to the detachable backrest upright". There is a luggage rack that mounts without a backrest, #53743-97 detachable two up backrest. I had one, but sold it because I never used it.
