i have an '86 flt with a bad regulator. parts book calls for part#74516-86. ordered same from popular online vendor. part arrived and doesn't fit. the male plug on my bike is like the regulator for a newer model. 32 amp, not 22 as the harley parts book calls for. my plug is what most catalogs call a J type plug....my question is , does the plug style identify the amperage, i.e., can i assume the charging system was upgraded or fitted with a 32 amp system from the factory since i can't find any 22 amp regulators with the style of plug i have? by the way, the regulator that appears to be correct is harley #74519-88. any opinions will be greatly appreciated.
