99 FLHR Speedo Glitch

I have this intermittent problem with my Speedometer when starting up.

Once in a while after I turn the bike on and hit the start button the speedo needle pegs at maximum speed...seems like almost the polarity is switched.

I have to turn the bike off and hit the started again, it's always returned to 'normal'.

This morning it happened twice.

Just curious if anyone out there has had the same issue and what it took to solve the problem.

I'm riding a 99' FLHR with ~34K miles, carborated not injected..

Its doesn't seem to be a major problem but is annoying when I miss it and notice I'm doing 120mph down my 25 mph limit street. <grin>

+1 on the speed sensor. do the turn signals turn off automatically? Does cruise work? When you pull it you will be shocked by the amount of filings on the magnet....

The VSS problem is even worse when you don't use a good quality gear lube in the trans. Engine oil will not cut it in there.
