If the idle speed is too high combined with a lean mixture, it can do as you described. Fuel ignited by hot carbon in the cylinder will cause a dieseling effect.

You may find that this will set a code also.

You should check the jet size in the bike. If you have the factory manual, it will tell you in the carb section on the first page what is stock.

You would probably do well upping the low speed jet to a #45 and readjusting the idle mixture screw.
