04 Night Train shifter

I have a 04 Night Train & the shifter lever will sometimes stick in the up or down position while shifting. If I slightly tap it, it will return ready for the next shift. Any ideas as to why?

Make sure pivot points are clean and lubed. Also check for proper linkage adjustment.

My 04 Softail Standard has done the same thing before. Remove the shifter and the shaft that goes through the forward control bracket. That shaft most likely has some rust on it , clean it with fine grit sand paper or cloth , grease and replace. Make note of location of shifter on shaft so you can put it back in same place.
