Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
I have had my 2002 883R since early July. When I bought it, it had a Screamin Eagle 2 into 1 Pipe, stock air cleaner. Rode it a few times and it dieseled on me a few times. I checked the plugs to see if it was lean, and it was slightly lean, and I pulled the carb to see it it was stock jetting which it was. I installed a SE Air filter kit, and rejetted the Carb to #165 Main and #45 Slow Jet. It still seemed a little lean so I changed to #170 Main and #45 Slow Jet which is my current set up. My problem is, the bike still diesels when shut off, not all the time, but quiet often. I also noticed today when I pulled the air filter off that there is a build up of gas in the air filter, and it looks like it comes out of the carb and goes into the air filter, not enough to drip out but you can see it, and I don't know if that has something to do with it or not. I checked for leaks on the carb, but have all new gaskets from the SE Filter install. I have exhausted all my ideas on what could be causing this. Any help you guys could offer would be great, my next step is the dealer, and that will be $$$$...... Thanks

Re: Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
My intuition tells me gas may have seeped into the crankcase, out the breather and into the air filter...pull your dipstick snd smell it...it should not smell of gasoline...as far as the dieseling...a bit of red hot carbon in the combustion chamber may be glowing enough to continue combustion for a few strokes....I hope this helps...

Re: Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
Dieseling is usually the result of an idle speed that is too high or a lean mixture that could be the result of an intake leak or improper jetting. Your jetting sounds OK with what you are running (maybe a #46 on the low side) but an intake leak could change all that too making it leaner than normal.
The gas in the air filter is a result of the dieseling as it pushed the fuel out of the carb when it happens into the filter. Carbon build up can also cause this problem too igniting incoming fuel as you shut the bike off. Give this a try... Removing Carbon - Harley Davidson Community And also do this too... Finding An Intake Leak - Harley Davidson Community Then take a look through the self help forum too using the link below. V V V V V V

Re: Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
I just finished doing the suggested methods:
Removing Carbon - Harley Davidson Community Finding An Intake Leak - Harley Davidson Community I did not see any smoke coming from my pipe as I tried the Removing Carbon tip, and I did not notice any issues when trying the Finding An Intake Leak tip. I have a #48 slow jet on hand, but that will be too big. I can call my harley dealer and see if they have a #46, and give that a try. I don't think it matters, but I run 87 Octane fuel. Should I be running a mid grade or premium fuel? That's all I have left to check, after that I guess it will have to go to the dealer. |

I wouldn't run the 87 octane, could be part of your problem. At LEAST 91 octane if not then 93 .

Re: Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
Couldn't find a #46 Slow Jet locally, so looks like I will hold of on that idea for now. I just drained my half a tank of 87, and am going to fill up with 93 and hit the road. I will post back with results of the octane change.

Re: Dieseling, and gas build up in air filter?
Well I but on about 60 miles just around town. Made a few stops and the dieseling seemed to have stopped. Of course when I got home and pulled in the driveway shut it off and yes it dieseled.
The only thing I can think of is that the #45 slowjet is still too lean? |
