I would agree to those that stated that the cooler the temp the better it will run. Here in Wi. it has been in the forty's and my classic runs beautiful. some warm dud's and I am really enjoying the rides as the scoot is happy.

carb icing can occur in most conditions its is as its name says ICE but not were you can phsically see the ICE.
it forms inside the float bowl of the Carb not on the surfaces but actually in the fuel the water/moisture that is in the fuel freezes into droplets and gets sucked as you would expect over the needle and jets which is why when you let off it drop the ICE and picks up.
It can also happen in areas of very high Humidity.
I used to run HDs anit icing treatment during winter on my carbed Sporties

You will probably find Gliders tip will indicate your bike is running rich jetting...sounds like a nice winter time project to find out what you have going on in there. Can't seem to find the full carb info thread Glider recently updated that included the cutaway, circuit effectivity and recommended settings for jets 96 & 185 with 2 #4 washers under the needle et-al but someone will find it...

The cold air will make it run lean. The colder air will make more power aslo. You need more fuel to make it run right. The Carb should not ice up unless you are sucking in some moisture and the temps are colder.

Smile Re: riding in 40 degree weather, ice building???

I get carb icing on the big twins from Jan to April although
have never experienced the problem on the 883 however it is fitted with an SE air cleaner
fitting of a high flow air cleaner and re jetting to suit does reduce the effect of the carb icing on the big twins
fitting a mikuni hsr 42 further reduced the problems have both big twins now at the stage that i get a lot of backfiring and rough running untill warmed fully up then they become usable but tend to keep the speed down to around 50 in the colder temps (getting old) perhaps the bikes will be ok faster but ill just get colder quicker
