Exhausts sound different????
Hi all i know i have not been here for some time what with work and a house move
![]() I have not been riding the HD much either, i had a couple of days off so i took it for a spin when i got home i let it idle and the drive soaking up the lovely off beat engine and it sounded odd the rear pipe sounds deeper like its down a tunnel and the front still sounds like it did the 2 sounds are so different its got me worried yes i know they may be different lengths but its never sounded like this - it still pulls like an Amtrax express and there appears to be no air leaks so i am going to swap the plugs for a new set, just worried it may be a stick valve or something i am going to run a shot of Redex through the bike also its similar to seafoam it removes carbon build up. Any ideas and thanks in advance |

Re: Exhausts sound different????
Maybe try a compression test to see if things are OK there. If it runs OK and the compression is OK then not knowing what mufflers you have, check the baffles.

Re: Exhausts sound different????
hi glider cheers for that its an 06' with 4900 miles on it the pipes are slip on V&H straight shots normal baffles it only happens once its been ridden which is strange when its cold the pipes sound exactly the same and its only the pipe from the rear jug - its due an oil change and primary chain check as i have done all the other service bits just got to drain oil

Re: Exhausts sound different????
Interesting that it would happen when warm. Lets get around to checking for an intake leak which would do this sort of thing if one cylinder was running leaner than the other. Use a can of WD40 and spray around the intake seals at the heads and see if you can hear a difference in the running of the engine when you do it.

Re: Exhausts sound different????
once i have done the oil and primary chain i will check for an air leak but judging by the colour of my plugs i think the suckers running rich - carb is set up as follows 45 pilot jet 4 turns on the mixture and a dynojet emulsion tube and needle with a 170dj main jet and the plugs are ermmm Black i hardly use the choke other than to start the bike then its in half way and in fully once the bike will idle on its own.
If i turn it down to 3 and 3/4 it back fires on decel suggesting a lean condition if i put the 42 in and turn it to 4turns it back fires the only time it did not seem to pop and bang was with the 48 and 2.5 turn but then it surged at 1/4 throttle more than 4 turns i have been told i need a bigger jet.the filter is SE |

Re: Exhausts sound different????
I never cared mush for the dj kits, they never seem to run properly in most areas consistently and the pic of the plugs backs this up.. The idle adjustment should be done with the engine warmed and adjusted to the highest and steadiest RPM then closed about 1/16 of a turn to the lean side.Setting it according to turns out is like being a little pregnant
![]() If you have popping on decel, either the mixture is incorrect or the exhaust has a leak at the pipe to head or the muffler joint where it joins the pipe. Usually you can see some carbon if there is a leak. A carefully inspection with a flashlight may reveal something that is causing the popping. Check to see that the mufflers are installed deep enough and the slot in the muffler mount is fully on to the pipe and not leaking there under the clamp. I use a straight pin to verify this so I don't have to get down to look.

Re: Exhausts sound different????
i do all my adjustments as you have said at temp the scars on my knuckles testifiy to this
.I have sat in the garage a full set of normal HD jets that obivously do not fit the DJ emulsion tube which is how i found out it has the kit fitted ![]() I do not have the orginal parts as i bought it like this and when i bought it really did back fire and pop on decel fingers crossed it wont have caused any lasting damage with only 5K on the clock. Think i will order the stock needle and emulsion tube and start from scratch. any ideas for a starting point as i noticed the 170dj is very similar to the stock 200. Thanks in advance Rob |

Re: Exhausts sound different????
Rob
The HD jets and DJ jets are not compatible in the same system. With the stock emulsion tube and parts a good starting place would be a #45 low jet and a 175/180 hi speed jet. If you have the factory manual for the bike, it will tell you the stock jets in the carb in the beginning of the carb section and I would go one size bigger on the low and main jets if you are running a stage 1 and mufflers, otherwise only one size on the low will do it with a properly adjusted idle mixture. Possible someone else with a factory manual here and the same bike could take a look here if you don't have the factory manual. The upper end is usually rich enough but the low end is lean on most bikes with factory jets. You can even fine tune it to be a bit richer if a smaller jet is too lean here using the mixture screw to a degree. Generally if more fuel is desired in the upper range, you can shim the needle to bring in the hi speed fuel earlier and is a better way of adding fuel in the upper range than a larger jet. Do you know if the vacuum port in the slide was drilled ? I don't like to do that because it can cause irratic running in cooler temps when the throttle is opened quick. It will lean out temporarily and pop back. Highly unlikely that the decel pop would do any damage being it is just lighting off a mixture in the muffler and the end of the muffler is obviously open to the atmosphere.

Re: Exhausts sound different????
I agree with the factory manual, it's hard to beat it.
Different kits use different drill bits to drill out the slide .One kit included a #29 bit, the other a 1/8-inch bit. If you take a look at the slide vacuum hole, test the size with a drill bit to see if it fits or not, it should give you an indication of if it has been drilled or not. If either of the above bits fit in the hole, then it has been drilled. Ususally when kit is installed the hole is drilled from my experiences but not always. Can't be of any help with part numbers for these parts, sorry. This HD dealer can give you 20% off on parts if you enter the part number.Maybe get in touch with them in an email, I'm sure they can hook you up. https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/pLookUp.php
