Jack shaft sticking
Anybody ever had the starter jack shaft not retract after starting? My 2003 FXSTI hung a while back and would not release even when I pulled the power to the starter to make sure it wasn't still energized. Finally let go after I rode it a few feet down the road. Pulled primary cover off, everything seems ok, and acts normal now with cover removed. Just curious before I went to all the trouble to pull the starter.

67shovelbucket is an unknown quantity at this point

just my guess but it sounds to me like your starter clutch got stuck for some odd reason making it all stay intact I had that happen to my 67 and it broke my jack shaft into turned out it was starter clutch.
