I suggest the HD manual from the dealer for your bike. It will give you the best input on various operations over the other brands with better explanations..

I always use the smallest dab of blue loctite. Always holds and I have never had a problem loosening them.

Generally I end up tightening something until it breaks and/or strips out, then back off a half turn.

I use to do that too. Now I know things do not have to be that tight to stay on.
I am surpised at how little both my primary covers need.
