Turn Signal Removal

I have recently bought my first big twin, a 1996 FLSTF, low miler. Original owner has it outfitted with the H-D cargo rack. It is my intention to remove the rack, to bring the lines of the bike more into my idea of where they should be. I need to loosen the rear signal pod shaft on both sides, in order to lift the rack assembly off the rear fender. Is there an easier way, then trying to access the nuts on the inside of the rear fender? Any info is appreciated.
