What does the serial number tell you?

What does the serial number tell you?
I was wondering if the serial number will tell you what number the bike was in the production line? If your serial number is 011045, does that mean you have the 45th one built? Does the model and year make any difference?

Have a look at this site, there is a calculator that will give you the info you need. Just input your VIN number. It does not work with twin cams however.

So it says, "Sequential Number" next to the serial number. I guess 0045 means 45th one built if there were only 430 made. Does that sound right?
