Idle,yes! Accelerate no?
I have a 91' Heritage. The bike will idle, but when I try to accelerate I lose power and it starts to backfire and pop thru the carb. When I let off the gas it idles fine. I have noticed when this happens I lose some power to the system. I have cleaned the carb. Relaced the voltage regulator, ignition module and starter relay. Sometimes I will lose all power and it will not come back on for about 1 minute but then starts ok. Help!

Re: Idle,yes! Accelerate no?
Have you tried the simple things, like cleaning both ends of the battery cables?
You could be having intermittent contact.

Re: Idle,yes! Accelerate no?
Main breaker could be weak or the popping on accel could be a bad diaphragm in the top of the carb.

Re: Idle,yes! Accelerate no?
The main breaker was replaced 2 weeks ago. The battery was replaced 2 months ago and the terminals were cleaned. When I took apart the carb I cleaned the diaphram and looked for any holes or wear but did not see any. The thing that gets me is the loss of some system power? I will check the grounds again tomorrow, but it only happens when I accelerate.

You may want to check the voltage from the charging system with increased RPM's.

Re: Idle,yes! Accelerate no?
I had an issue with steel braided spark plug wires that did the same thing. Check the wires.....
