Re: Dang kids and Guns
I always look for the common denominator. Most of the time, the kids lack parental controls or come from broken families. Bullying is a large part of the problem with our youth. Without a parent role model to support the children in times of confusion, many of these kids resort to the measures they see and hear about rather than consulting an adult for guidance.
Church is another great place kids can find the support they need. Unfortunately, the news media doesn't always reveal the whole story behind the childs problem. Too many times, the news people would rather stimulate our senses with sensationalism and fear.

I grew up in a house full of guns kept in a closet, and the ammo in another closet. I was taught to respect firearms and the resonsibility that goes with them. If my parents or grandparents caught myself or my brothers/sisters in that closet without permission till about 14 years of age, I still wouldn't be able to sit down without a reminder on by butt of what I had done WRONG!
I have carried a pocket knife since I was 6 yo, again any thought of misusing it would have brought serious repercussions, with my butt being the center of attention.... My parents have always been 110% up front about what happens when you break the rules, and always made sure the lessons of right/wrong was clearly understood. They were less worried about my "self esteme" and more interested in the fact that we grew up to be responsible adults, all six of us, and it worked. I still say yes mam and no mam to my mother, and have never raised my voice to her, a lesson learned when I was about 4yo, and I still remember the results of that transgression..... I used to think they were pretty hard on us, but when I started raising my own two boys, I quickly understood why they did what they did, and I'm greatfull every day of my life. What worked with myself and my sibs, worked with my boys, and for that matter my brother and sisters kids also. My parents must have done it right......... I belive it was Teddy Rosevelt (sp?), who said "he belived in democracy in all areas except the raising of kids".......... |

Re: Dang kids and Guns
Parents should take the responsibility of raising their children. My mother-in-law is a retired school teacher, still the most requested sub in her county. She had her first complaint from a parent in all of her years last year, (this is a small county in WV) and the complaint was that the parent didn't feel mom in law had the right to make the child address her as Ma'am. Glad to hear the principle of the school backed her on that. Makes you wonder why that complaint was ever logged.
That should tell you a lot about the school system, and the problem with newer schools having daycares in them for the kids having kids. I am still scared of my mom. ![]() |

Re: Dang kids and Guns
I have 4 girls at home. The middle two love going hunting with me. All (except for the 2 month old) know how to use (load, unload, safety, ect.) guns. They even have a few of there own but they know that they do not touch any gun in the house unless i'm there with them and to always treat guns as if they are loaded. Kids are not raised the same way as they were back when I was growing up. If we half way got out of line our parents would tear our tales up. I could go on for days about this. I have one that will start high school this year and one that will be in middle school and I can not believe some of the things they come home telling us that has happen.

Re: Dang kids and Guns
a good percentage of it has to do with drugs. kids and drugs are not like back in our day where you sit by the river with a doobie and a six pack. hard illegal drugs and illegal guns are both a big criminal enterprise now. where you find one you can find the other. all of this crap hit home this week when a drugged up numbskull started killing people in my neighborhood. you may have seen it on the news they finally caught him last nite. it wasnt fun to keep the kids inside and be locked and loaded.
