Changing Your Oil (drain plugs)

Here's a few pics for anyone that is going to change their own oil instead of going to the dealer for service. I would advise getting a service manual for the proper torque and other info.

Here's a pic of the softail engine oil drain viewed from the top of the frame and below the frame in the first and second pics.

In the third pic, you will see the location of the transmission drain plug for softails that is between the two shocks on the bike.

In the last pic, you will see the location of the trans and the engine oil drain plugs for baggers.

Always check the condition of the "O" ring if equipped before reinstalling the drain plug.

NOTE:
One more thing here and that is not to be tempted to remove the plug in the bottom of the engine sump (case) It has been tried by some and in a few cases they have cracked the engine case doing it.
The plug is there from the manufacturing process for the case and is installed with red locktite.

Touring and some dynas...

Softail trans drain is up between the shocks, always start it by hand with a socket on an extension and run it in by hand to avoid stripping the case from cross threading...

Sportsters and the older FXR's have a similar drain for the engine oil that is located under the oil tank and is a hose that is attached to a nub on the frame usually with a clamp that is used to drain the engine oil.

Also on some models the transmission drain is located on the bottom of the end cover.

re: Changing Your Oil (drain plugs)

Hi, I have an 01 dyna. I am new to Harleys. I just got out of the service and baught a Harley instantaneously when I got home. I don't know much about them but I am a mechanic. Anyways. I am trying to completely change all the fluids in it because I am going on a 5k mi. adventure this summer. To change the transmission lube do you just pull the plug and about a quart comes out. put the plug back in and add one quart to the same place you check the level where the dip stick is. I hope so because that is what I did. I couldn't find the oil plug and thats the only reason I changed the tranny lube was because I pulled the wrong plug. I know I should have a service manual, its on the way. I just need a little knoweledge. Can you help me out big guy?

Sounds like you got the trans down pat, the engine oil should be the same on the dyna as the pic in the top post.
If not it's half way back on the oil pan with a small shield around it just inside the frame rail, kind of hard to see without a mirror.

re: Changing Your Oil (drain plugs)

I've probably changed my tranny oil more often by accident than on purpose because I looked under and pulled a plug instead of pulling the manual.

re: Changing Your Oil (drain plugs)

I have a 99 FXR2, which is a CVO bike. As such I have a hard time finding detailed info about this particular model.

Here's what I know: Its a Dyna LowRider on an FXR frame with a Sportster front end and an Evo 80 engine.

Here's what I don't know: Some places I look the Evo engines have a rubber tube with a plug in the end to drain the oil (this mostly seems to be on Sportster models though), and some have a real drain plug. I've looked under my bike (I don't own a lift so its a little difficult) and I can't see either.

Can somebody tell me where I drain the oil from this thing please?
