Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

nice info!
glider, what do u think of lucas 20w50 for the engine?
since u choose spectro (they're not in the market here) instead of hd formula, which do u suggest of these 2, redline or mobil 1 for 5speed tranny? what weight?
thanks!

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

Either Redline or Mobil would do you well. The Redline would be the shockproof heavy and the Mobil would be either 75/90 of 75/140 depending on the temps you ride in.

I've never used Lucas because I prefer the oils specified above.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

As with many products used in HDs, it's not the easiest thing here in dear old Blighty getting hands on Spectro, (Redline) or similar oils for the Primary/Tranny in my Sportster. Thanks to M'one, I found a dealer and bought a supply of Mobil 1 V-twin 20/50. These guys also sell this oil which they recommend for Sportsters:

Torco V Series Primary Chain Case Lubricant

They rate it for Buells and Sportsters.
Any of you folks used it or got any experiences with this stuff??

Thanks guys.

Hey Glider.
I'm thinking 75/90 grade would be fine for the modest temps in the UK. I saw that Redline do a V twin gear oil:

Red Line Oil: Gear Lubricants

Would this be an acceptable choice for the Primary/Tranny needs of my Sporty??

Thanks as always for the advice.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

According to their web page it looks like it is.

<snip>
Red Lines new V-twin Primary Case Oil is designed specifically for 84-to-present V-Twin American motorcycle engines, including aftermarket engines of similar designs. Similar to our MTL, this product is for use in the primary chaincase with wet-diaphragm spring clutches.

what does the 75 tell?
the 90 & 140 numbers tell the ambient temp..uh..dont they ?
day temp here ranges between 89-100f plus traffic n stuff..

thanks!

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

I believe it's the multi viscosity rating here having to do with flowing at different temps.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

I am limited to the products I can find close by in Maine, but was thinking of using the mobil1 20w-50 vtwin in the engine, mobil1 racing 4t 10w-40 in primary, and mobil1 synthetic gear lube LS 75w-90 in tranny

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

Good choices, just make sure the primary oil isn't "energy conserving" . Bad for the clutch linings.
