But can I use their gear oil in the primary. Is the gear oil for auto applications different than motorcycle applications? I want to do what is best for my bike, without having to drive 100 miles to get a product.
So here:
Engine oil ???
Primary ???
Tranny ???

Thanks,

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

Hello all - figure I would use my first post on something important because, well to be honest, when in doubt ask.

I have a 2009 Nightster - no mods. I have read thru the posts and can not find a straight answer. With the Primary and the Trans using same oil - can I use Redline V-Twin Trans oil w shock proof? I drove all over town looking for spectro hd primary as suggested for sportsters but no one around carries. The local Cycle shop sold me a qt of this stating that it is a solid substitue. Issue is that the posts I have found here do not state that clearly .

So can I use this without issue?

Thank you all for a great site - hope to be adding value soon.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

The redline shockproof is a very good oil but I think I would hesitate to use it in the sporty with the shared oil cavities. The viscosity index of the redline could cause a dragging in the clutch plates and it is known for it's outstanding clinging ability so I would find another oil to use myself.
The chain case oil from spectro as posted in the first post is ideal for the sporty chaincase/trans if you can find it. I believe someone stated you can order it direct from them and there are other links as well to order it from, It may be worth the wait rather than cause a dragging problem in the clutch plates with the thicker oil which would cause a problem shifting and finding neutral.

If they are a Spectro dealer they can order it in and have it in 1-2 bus. days.
When I first started buying from North End Cycle they didn't carry it either.

I've talked to them and all say they would have to order a min of a case and they don't want too because I'm the only one so far asking for it.

I can order it off the internet but thought I would try supporting the local establishments first.

Thanks for the info!

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys

Formula+ is good in the primary. No energy conserving oils in there and preferrably not synthetics either unless it specifies for use in the primary.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys (updated)

so it sounds like the best thing for my sportster is heavy duty spectro primary in the trans and then the mobile 1 v-t 20-50 in the engine?
