Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
The spectro 6 speed CAN be used in a 5 speed but they also make one for the 5 speed too.
Also use a GEAR oil and not the V Twin in the trans. Best off not using a NON synthetic in the primary , try the Formula+ from the dealer in the primary. |

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
Well, swapping out from Amsoil to the mobil 1 20/50 v-twin - $13.95 a qt at Napa, Formula 1 in the primary, spectro 75/140 GL1 in the 06 Ultra. Had to call all over town to find this stuff. Walmart discontinued the mobil 1 v-twin(bummer) and the bike shop (non-harley) carries spectro (hopefully the 75/140) and does Harley stock the formula 1 - Is this HD brand?
Swapping out from Amsoil as I can't find it now as local bike shop (50 yards away) shut their doors forever. I did not know that they were the amway of oil - ha. Anyway - am looking and trying to do the right thing. I appreciate everyone's advice. Only problems is that I am having a difficult time finding some of these goodies in the small desert towns in western Colorado Anyway - The local autozone, checker and other parts stores don't carry said oils. Any more advice for some "easier to find" oils that will still perform above par? - GB

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
The formula+ should be available in any harley dealer and the spectro is available on the net to rider.

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
Glider,
Do you know of any significant difference between using the Spectro or the Redline in the trans? I changed out the trans fluid on my 07 to Redline and still get the normal 1st and 5th gear whine, and the normal gear cluck, will this reduced using the Spectro or is it what it is? |

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
Pretty much it is what it is. They are both good products although I switched from redline to spectro for better cold weather operation mainly it's a good year round choice (spectro). I found that the redline took a bit to warm up and thin down from the heat before it would shift easy unlike the spectro that is good from the start. Both are great products but the spectro has the edge IMO over the redline.
If you have the 1st and 5th whine, take a look here. I installed this on mine and it made a drastic difference not only in the whine but in the overall sound and feel of the bike completely. It was probably the best improvement in quality of the drive train I have ever seen. IDS Drive System - Harley Davidson Community |

Re: Oil Suggestions For Harleys
Ok, so here goes. I am doing the 10,000 mile service on my 06 Softail Standard. I will be changing the oil, primary, and tranny fluid. Here are my questions. The Spectro is hard as (EDITED) to find, so I think I am going to go with the Royal Purple. According to their site, the oil can be used for all three holes. But can I use their gear oil in the primary. Is the gear oil for auto applications different than motorcycle applications? I want to do what is best for my bike, without having to drive 100 miles to get a product.
So here: Engine oil ??? Primary ??? Tranny ??? Thanks, Gary Please read this... Last edited by glider; Apr 30th, 2009 at 06:47 PM. |
