Re: Engine Oil Poll

my 2008 Ultra Classic is due for it's 1000 mile service soon. (even sooner if snow goes away) I want to change to Amsoil MCV in engine, primary and transmission. Has anybody had any experience with this oil in their 08 bike especially in regards to transmission and primary?

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Use what ever oil you want BUT use a gear oil in the trans. You wouldn't put gear oil in the engine, why use engine oil in the gearbox?

Also consider when using the Amsoil the availability when on the road as compared to Mobil or other big name brands..

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Glider - I know that Amsoil isn't readily available on the road but one thing most people don't know about that product is that is will mix with not only other synthetics but petroleum base stock oils also. All mixing does is cut down on the interval length of Amsoil's longer frequency oil change that they speak about. So in reality if you're on the road and you have Amsoil in the crankcase and primary and you need oil and come across Mobile 1 synthetic - use it. You will not harm the bike. Just do an oil change when you arrive home. Of course I am not one who would ever mix a petroleum base stock product with a synthetic but from what i have read, it can be done. And I also agree with you about using a Gear Oil in the tranny.

Leap

I agree with you completely about the mixing, however, I am the type that still would never mix them. You can even add dino oil to synthetics without any harm other than defeating the purpose of the synthetics qualities.
I have no worries there thou because Amsoil will never find it's way into my motors. I just don't agree with their marketing practices and the pyramid type system they use to sell their product.

Re: Engine Oil Poll

I've never had to add oil to a bike on the road in 40ish years of riding Harleys, I've had to change oil during a few 6000+mile trips but never add!!
Even my 66FLH uses less then 1/2qt in 3000 miles. I'll be the first to admit I'm the guy that changes his oil to often but I've never had a oil related problem ether!!

Re: Engine Oil Poll

The racing oils aren't the best choice. They do not have the additive packages that the street oils do. Most race engines are torn down frequently so there isn't the need for the additive packages that are in oils used in street bikes.

The Mobil1 V Twin is a good choice for air cooled motors.
