One interesting thing I did not know was oil can be too slick for a Harley. It has to have some fancy “tach” quality or the bearing race can spin around the shaft, and the actual bearings not be working and you can clearly see the problem there. He said HD oil was the worst in all his findings, in every category of every test,, but that is the oil I’ve always used since 1973, with no oil related issues. But I now use Amsoil since that’s all that’s ever been in Seabiscuit, so far so good.
I recently spoke with an Indy who recommended airplane oil. Said it allows things to "spin" as they should instead of " hammer" - has some failed parts for proof. Don't know enough to say I agree or not, but interesting nonetheless.

Wow! I know a few things about oil being the AMSOIL sponsor here on the forum and that is a pretty bold recommendation.

Regardless of the brand of oil you might use I will say that oil is engineered for specific applications by qualified lubrication engineers. Different motors have different requirements and therefore the oil will contain different additive packages for the application.

Maybe that Indy is a good mechanic but I would not follow his oil recommendation.

Re: Engine Oil Poll

Mobil 1 V-Twin for the engine, Mobil 1 Racing Motorcycle oil in the primary, and Spectro 6-speed for the trans.

Please keep all conversations and questions on oils to the oil forum instead of posting them in the POLL threads.

The POLL threads are for gathering information on the products and not for discussions about the products themselves .

The OIL forum is for the questions and answers.

Re: Engine Oil Poll

I am on my 3rd Harley and have run Amsoil, dino and gear lubes with good results. I changed my 2005 RK over to M1 20w50 Vtwin syn in all 3 holes. Upper end noise quieted down and trans shifted consistanly with less clunk into gear from neutral. I have run this in all 3 holes on this RK, my 2007 E/glide and now my '11 Heritage. all with good results. Oil is avail local for $10 a qt and easy to remember when it is time to change. Same stuff throughout. My 2 cents.
