You have 3 different compartments of oil in your bike unless it's a sportster.
Hi, I just got my 2004 Sportster XL1200RS and wanted to know the three different compartments Sportster exception discussed above. I thought the Oil Tank held the engine oil (the oil pan is a "dry" sump design), Primary Gear Oil was held in the left side side (lubricating gears & oil wetted clutch) and where is the 3rd...Primary Chain compartment? I am a newbie so please be patient; cars and UJM sportbikes were my primary interest early on before this Harley.
The sportster shares the trans and primary oil. Only 2 oils in your bike.

The Rotella is a good oil but there are better weight choices than the 15/40 for the air cooled motor as well as they choice in the trans. I realize Harley suggests the use of it in a situation where others aren't available but in a hot climate especially a 20/50 would be a better choice.

Any experience with Synthetic Motul 3000 20/50 for 4-Stroke (it does include HD V-Twin Single & Twin Cam engines on the label). It also says it has two EP additives for engines w/ transmission and wet clutches...whew

Re: Engine Oil Poll

No experience with that product but you'll find that some manufacturers have changed the labeling on their products recently to include things as you mentioned. Don't know if the formula has changed or if it is a marketing ploy.

I've run this oil in a couple of my non harleys. It seem to work well.

Motul makes an oil for V-twins, Twin-Syn 20w50 V-twin motorcycle oil. Again, it appears to be a good oil.

There are so many choices. In order to make it easy for me, I now use amsoil products in all my bikes. It's nice to order it and have it delivered to the house. That and it's a good oil.

I'm not saying you should use what I use, it a personal choice. As long as the oil meets or exceeds the manufacture requirements, you should have no problems.

Thank you for the info. I am using Motul Syn Motor Oil & Spectrol Gold Primary Gear Oil because I try to support local motorcycle shops here in SoCal, Cycle Gear, Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/CanAm etc, who BTW they have a lot of used late model Harley's from '90 up; plus several "Mom & Pop" aftermarket repair shops.

OK, here is some data for you folks that like that stuff. Just changed all the lubricants this past weekend. Engine oil had 3,910 miles on it since the last change, but I have been changing the filter every ~1,000 miles and topping up the oil level. Here is a picture of the plug straight out of the pan, and cleaned up. Very happy with this. This is the lowest amount of "fuzz" I have had on the engine oil drain plug.

TQ
